Should You Use a Mouthguard at Night?

Posted on 11/15/2016 by Alicia Knaysi
A dentist holding a mouthguard.Mouthguards serve a wide variety of purposes. They can protect your teeth when playing sports, they can help shift your teeth into place when using them as aligners, they can help whiten your teeth with the right products, and they can even keep your teeth protected during the night.

If you suffer from clenching or grinding known as bruxism, or if you snore or have apnea, a mouthguard may be the way to find relief at night.

How a Mouthguard Can Help

A mouthguard is set up in a way to make sure your mouth is perfectly aligned for what you need it for. If it is for playing sports, then your teeth are aligned so that your teeth can be safe if an impact should occur. Mouthgards for night depend on what your nighttime issue is.

If you need help to stop snoring, it often holds your teeth in place with one of your jaws shifted slightly so that your airway stays more open than it would without the guard in place.

The same idea goes for sleep apnea, but they are set up to hold your mouth wider open than to help with snoring. Clenching and grinding is often done without you being aware that it is going on, so the mouthguard is set up to keep your teeth separated so you cannot hurt your other set of teeth if you are doing it in your sleep.

Using a mouthguard can save your teeth from a lot of damage. It can also allow you to sleep better at night because you are not getting woken up to sore teeth or without enough air. If you want a mouthguard to help you get better sleep at night, contact us today. They can customize a mouthguard to help with your specific need.
