Foods to Avoid Immediately After a Dental Whitening Procedure

Posted on 2/25/2017 by Alicia Knaysi
A cup of hot coffee.
Right after you get your teeth whitened, it is important to take special care to keep them that way. Your teeth can be more susceptible to pain and sensitivity for a few days following this procedure, plus, depending on the procedure you had done, they can also be more prone to staining.

If you are worried about staining your newly whitened teeth, consider a few foods you may want to keep out of your diet for a week or two.

Foods That Commonly Stain Teeth

There are a few foods known to stain anything they come in contact with, including teeth. These are the foods you want to avoid for a week or two after your whitening procedure to help protect your teeth. Foods like curries, mustards, and beets are definitely going to cause staining to many teeth, including those that are freshly whitened. This becomes even more true if you won't be able to brush as soon as you are done eating.

Some Beverages Stain Teeth, Too

It isn't just foods that can stain your newly whitened teeth, as some beverages can do it, too. Avoid coffee, some dark teas, and wine for at least one to two weeks following the procedure. This gives you a safe window of time to allow your teeth to stay as white as possible. If you cannot live without your tea or coffee, then make sure to drink it out of a straw during that timeframe.

For other restrictions following the procedure to whiten your teeth, contact our office as soon as you can after the procedure. He or she can give you a really solid idea of what can be done to prolong the white appearance you got for as long as possible.
