Dental Bridge Richmond, VA
When you experience tooth loss it’s imperative that you do your best to replace the tooth, or teeth, as soon as you can. At Fred Knaysi DDS, PC, we will always do what is best for your smile and in the case of tooth loss, the best thing that we can do is offer you a wide variety of tooth replacement options to choose from.
What happens when you lose a tooth?
When you lose a tooth a number of changes can occur to the rest of your teeth and jaw that will end up having a negative impact on your oral health. Teeth rely on each other for support, and when a tooth is lost, its neighboring teeth lose their structural support. The neighboring teeth will then tend to drift into the gap that is left behind which can cause your bite to change. When your bite changes, you may begin to experience jaw fatigue and even tooth damage.
Reasons for Choosing a Fixed Bridge
Fixed bridges offer a permanent tooth replacement option, which is one of their strongest advantages. When you opt to replace missing teeth with partial dentures you are committing to a lot of extra upkeep and effort. Partial and full dentures require you to remove them to sleep and clean. Partial dentures aren’t typically worn while eating, so they can’t help with the discomfort of eating some foods with missing teeth. Fixed bridges can be taken care of in the same way that you take care of your natural teeth – with regular brushing and flossing.
Getting Your Fixed Bridge
It usually takes at least two appointments to have a fixed bridge placed. During the first appointment, we will prepare the anchor teeth to receive the bridge. We do this by shaving some of the enamel off of the anchor teeth so that the bridge can fit over the top of them. Once teeth have been altered in this fashion they cannot act as teeth without a restoration placed over them. At this point we will take an impression of your teeth and the area that the bridge will be placed so that we can send it to our dental lab. Using this impression our dental lab will create an exact replica of your natural teeth.
Before the first appointment ends we will fit your teeth with a temporary bridge to give you the ability to eat and speak as your normally would until the permanent restoration is ready to be placed.
At the second appointment, we will remove the temporary bridge and place the permanent one. We will make sure that it fits into your bite properly and that will be it. It may take a few weeks for you to get used to the feel of your new bridge. If after a few weeks the bridge still feels out of place, call us at (804) 554-5599 to schedule an appointment for us to adjust the way it fits.
