Teeth Veneers Richmond, VA
If you are unhappy with the current state of your smile, you may want to consider dental veneers. Veneers are thin shells, typically made from porcelain, which mimic the appearance of natural and esthetically-pleasing teeth. Each veneer is custom-made by a dental laboratory and designed to be bonded to the front of your teeth. Veneers can change the size, color, shape, or length of your existing teeth. At Fred Knaysi DDS, PC, we believe porcelain veneers can give you a renewed sense of confidence and improve your quality of life.
Why Choose Porcelain Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are typically used to correct cosmetic issues for the anterior (front) teeth. They are considered to be a conservative alternative to dental crowns because crowns require an entire reshaping of the tooth. Veneers only require a minor reshaping, preserving more of your natural tooth, and preventing problems associated with complete restructuring.
Porcelain Veneers are used to correct misshapen, chipped, worn, or crooked teeth. Patients with severely stained or discolored teeth can also benefit from veneers. We can also use veneers to eliminate unwanted gaps and resize teeth that are too small or too large.
Some offices use resin composite materials for veneers. We choose porcelain because it is more resistant to stains and better mimics the light reflecting properties of a natural tooth. Porcelain is a delicate material; however, once it is firmly bonded to the tooth, it becomes a strong and durable restoration that can last for many years.
Procedure for Porcelain Veneers
The first step requires your active participation. This usually takes place during a consultation visit, where you will explain the desired results you are trying to achieve. Once we have determined that veneers be the right choice for you, we can begin the preparation process.
During your first visit, the front of your teeth will be lightly buffed. This will remove a tiny portion of your enamel to accommodate for the thickness of the veneer. If you have sensitivity issues, we can use a local anesthetic to numb the area. After the procedure, we will select the desired shade, and take an impression of each tooth. The impressions are sent to the dental laboratory, where they will fabricate your final restoration. This will usually take a few weeks to complete.
Once the restoration is complete, we can schedule a second visit, and install the veneers. Your teeth will be cleaned, polished, and etched, to roughen the tooth and strengthen the bond. Before each veneer is permanently cemented, Dr. Knaysi will temporarily place them, to check the margins and achieve a proper fit. A bonding cement is then applied to the tooth, and the veneer is set in place. We will use a specialized light to harden and properly set the bond.
After the process is complete, Dr. Knaysi will go over the care instructions, and suggest a follow-up visit to make sure your gums are accepting the veneers. Like most dental restorations, your veneers may someday need to be replaced or repaired. With proper oral hygiene and regular check-ups, your veneers can last anywhere from 10 to 20 years!
