Periodontal (Gum) Disease Treatment in Richmond, Virginia with Fred A. Knaysi, DDSEveryone is concerned about the health of their teeth, and rightly so. Damaged or decaying teeth can be very expensive to fix, so the goal is usually to take preventive measures against oral maladies like cavities. What a lot of people don’t realize is that the gums play a critical role in the health of your teeth. The gums can become infected and can adversely affect the health of your teeth. At Fred Knaysi DDS, PC, we care about your oral health and want you to be able to enjoy your teeth for as long as you can. Take a moment to learn a few things about gum (periodontal) disease and what steps you can take to prevent it.

What is periodontal disease?

Gum or periodontal disease is the gums equivalent of cavities in your teeth. Just as your teeth become infected by the bad bacteria that live in your mouth and thrive off of the sugars and acids in your mouth, so do your gums become infected with gum disease. It’s the same plaque and tartar bacteria that infects your gums that affects your teeth.

How does periodontal disease start?

When you forget to brush your teeth once or twice it’s probably not going to be that big of a deal. When you forget to brush and floss a lot, it can turn into a real nightmare. The reason we brush and floss is to wash away the sticky bacterial build up known as plaque. If plaque is taken off of your teeth as it forms with regular brushing and flossing, it can’t build up to dangerous levels. If you ignore your oral hygiene for long enough that plaque can harden into a substance called tartar and it can even begin to reach below the gum line.

When plaque or tartar manages to get between your teeth and gums, your gums will become inflamed and infected. This is the early stages of gum disease. If it is allowed to continue unhindered, it can reach late stage periodontal disease, which cannot be cured, only treated.

What You Can Do To Prevent Gum Disease

T
he way you can most effectively combat gum disease is to stay on top of brushing and flossing. Brush at least twice a day and floss at least once a day. If you can, rinse your mouth out with water after meals to help wash away food particles. Gum disease is not easily noticeable, so you should make sure to come in to see us at least twice a year for routine cleanings and examinations. Some warning signs that you may be developing gums disease include:

•  Swollen gums
•  Irritated gums
•  Gums that bleed easily
•  Bad breath that does not go away
•  A change in the way your bite fits together
•  A change in the way that dentures fit

Periodontitis can have a dramatically negative impact on your oral health and can even result in the loss of teeth and bone in the jaw. Make sure to give us a call today at (804) 554-5599 to schedule your appointment today.
