7 Interesting Facts About Teeth Whitening

The teeth whitening process means making teeth look whiter by using bleach and other whitening agents to remove any sort of stains, discoloration, etc., from the surface of teeth.  It is a cosmetic procedure to improve the appearance of teeth often undertaken by people who have stained teeth. This may be permanent or temporary.

Coffee, cigarettes, etc., can stain your teeth or cause discoloration. Certain medications like tetracycline can also affect the color of the tooth. Here are seven other facts about teeth whitening that you might want to know:

1. Teeth Whitening Is Not Harmful to Your Teeth

Teeth whitening, if done correctly, with instruction, is generally safe. The process involves using chemical agents that can open pores in the enamel and help in removing stains. This procedure does not do any sort of damage and is easy to maintain too.

2. Sensitivity Issues Post-Whitening Is Normal

Once the whitening process has been completed, people encounter sensitivity issues. This is mainly because the teeth post-whitening becomes dehydrated. This reduces its ability to shield the nerves from temperature changes for about 12 to 36 hours. To restore hydration, dentists recommend a fluoride treatment.

3. Stains Can’t Be Removed Overnight

No product in the market can show immediate results. It is chemically impossible for any whitening agent to get deep inside so quickly. This process can take from a few days to several months, depending on the stain. People with permanent stains need to stay patient during the process.

4. Veneers and Caps Can’t be Whitened

Artificial caps and veneers are created to match the color of the person’s natural teeth. They can neither be whitened nor stained.

5. Whiten Before Going to Bed

Teeth become more susceptible to getting stained post-whitening. So, dentists always suggest whitening during the night before going to bed, when the chances of stain are very low. Doing the procedure during nighttime also gives time for your teeth to rehydrate.

6. Not Everyone Can Have Super White Teeth

There is a set genetic color for your teeth that can’t be changed. Whitening products can just remove stains and regain your natural color, not make it super white.

7. UV or Laser Light Whitening Is Temporary

UV light is a short wave light that activates the whitening gel and enables it to show results more quickly. It can only be used under the supervision of a dentist. Besides the fact that it can whiten teeth really quickly, it is not feasible for people with sensitive teeth.  The process is expensive and time-consuming.

Where to Get Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening can be performed under the supervision of a dentist or at home by using OTC products.
