Everything About Sedation Dentistry

Do you often feel anxious about your dental visits? Are you afraid of undergoing dental procedures? Or do you find it difficult to sit still for a long time for dental treatments? You can benefit from sedation dentistry. When patients have dental anxiety, they avoid going to the dentist, which means their teeth will decay, and gum disease can easily set in. This can cause patients to lose their teeth, so sedation dentistry can help them get the dental care they need.

Sedation dentistry involves the use of sedatives to allow the patients to relax during dental treatments, from cleanings to root canals. Each patient has a different level of anxiety, so the dentist will prescribe the right level of sedation to provide the best experience for the patient.

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry refers to the use of medication (typically sedatives) to help a patient relax during dental procedures.

What are its benefits?

Sedation dentistry is increasingly becoming popular for different dental procedures such as teeth cleaning, fillings, and cosmetic dentistry. What sets sedation dentistry from other dental procedures is that it offers patients a more relaxed and stress-free dental experience. During dental sedation, patients are given pharmacological agents, which make them completely relaxed and comfortable throughout their dental treatment.

With sedation dentistry, patients also experience a faster recovery time, which, in turn, allows them to get back to their normal routines sooner.

What are the common types of sedation dentistry methods?

There are four major types of sedation dentistry available.

  • Oral sedation: For sedation patients, an oral sedative can be prescribed to relax the patient’s nerves, relieve anxiety, and reduce pain. Patients usually take this medication about an hour before their dental procedure. Patients remain conscious and aware but will feel calm and relaxed. Oral sedation tends to produce few side effects, such as nausea or drowsiness.
  • Inhaled sedation (nitrous oxide): Inhalation sedation, also known as laughing gas, is the most popular sedation method used in dentistry. The patient inhales a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a mask. This gas calms the patient’s nerves, relieves pain and anxiety, and can treat mild to severe dental anxiety. Patients remain conscious and experience few side effects, such as nausea.
  • IV sedation:In IV sedation, the patient is given a combination of sedatives intravenously. The patient remains conscious and alert but will feel extremely relaxed. IV sedation is used for procedures that require a longer time, such as oral surgery, wisdom teeth removal, and dental implant placement.
  • General anesthesia:General anesthesia is a prescription drug that puts you into a deep sleep that lasts until you wake up. You will not feel any pain while you are under general anesthesia.

Who can benefit from sedation dentistry?

Dental sedation is especially helpful for patients with dental anxiety or for those with special needs. If a patient has difficulty sitting still, becoming relaxed, or needs longer or more complex procedures, sedation dentistry can help.
