How Sports Lead to High Cavity Levels

Maintaining good oral hygiene practices every day is important no matter what you do during the day. There are many activities that can keep us away from a toothbrush for long periods of time.

Nobody is telling you not to have fun. Unfortunately, though, having fun can cause us to forget about our teeth. Let's talk about how playing sports can cause cavities.

How Can Sports Cause Cavities

This may be something you've never thought about. Running around burning calories, being active, and gaining cavities just don't seem to go hand in hand. Burning excess levels of calories can make you very dehydrated.

Being dehydrated means you produce less saliva. It changes the pH level in your mouth, which can cause bacteria to grow, leading to cavities and tooth decay. The best choice to hydrate yourself is going to be water.

A water with fluoride in it will not only hydrate you, but also help restore your teeth. A sports drink or energy drink can contain sugar or carbohydrates that are ultimately bad for your tooth enamel. Drinking these drinks may not initially seem bad.

However, if you're drinking them frequently, giving your teeth more contact with the drink, you will probably notice changes in your sensitivity. The idea is to keep you at your best.

Playing sports can be very rewarding as long as you don't forget to take care of your body and your teeth. Stay hydrated and have fun, you deserve it. Continue brushing twice a day and floss once a day. See us every six months for cleanings and so they can check for other things.

Make sure you ask questions about what's in your energy drink or snack that could lead to problems. If you have any pain or discomfort, schedule an office visit right away. Filling a cavity is quick and easy if it means saving a tooth.
