Is a Cavity Causing Your Headache?

Headaches can be a real pain. They make you feel miserable and oftentimes you just want to curl up in a ball until the aching throbbing feeling goes away.

For most headaches, an over the counter pain medication is usually enough to help ease the pain.

But other times, it just isn't enough, and no matter what you do, it seems, your headache just won't go away. If you have chronic headaches, you may want to consider contacting your dentist, because that pain might just be caused by a cavity.

What is a Cavity?

A cavity is the result of tooth decay. Tooth decay happens when you have a buildup of plaque and bacteria on your teeth. As the bacteria feast upon lingering food particles, especially the sugars left from sweets and sodas, they produce acids. These acids eat away at the enamel of the teeth, creating holes known as cavities.

Nerves Exposed

The enamel of your teeth is a tough, protective exterior, that keeps the inside of your teeth, including their roots, safe. Under the enamel layer is a layer known as dentin. Dentin is the area full of hollow channels that lead directly to the roots of your teeth. When a cavity forms, it creates an opening to these channels, allowing things that shouldn't be there - hot, cold, acidic, salty or sweet foods and beverages - in.

When these irritants come in contact with the roots of your teeth, a stimulus is sent to other areas of your face, and to your brain, indicating pain. This pain can then trigger a headache. Regular over the counter pain medications can help you deal with pain temporarily, but it will not bring about a permanent solution. The best solution is to have the cavity filled.

Cavity Prevention

The best way to prevent cavities is proper oral hygiene. Brush your teeth at least twice a day, floss daily and rinse your mouth with an antibacterial mouthwash. And for your best results, visit your dentist at least twice a year for thorough cleanings and exams.
