Fluoride Treatment Richmond, VA

Patient receiving Fluoride Treatment Richmond, VA, by Fred Knaysi DDS, PCMany parents worry about their child developing cavities. That is why it is important to instill a sense of responsibility, by establishing good habits at an early age. Some parents find that turning oral care into a reward-based game can make it easier for the child to appreciate the importance of brushing and flossing. However, there are some factors that may be beyond the parent’s control, genetics for example.

Today, we see more, and more of our young patients grow up cavity-free. This is largely thanks to the use of fluoride treatments. Fluoride is a natural mineral that can help prevent tooth decay, and repair teeth in the early stagiest of the disease. With regular visits, cleanings, and our fluoride treatments, we can significantly reduce the chances of your child developing a cavity.

Why use Fluoride?

Research on fluoride has been going on since the 1930s. Time and time again, results have concluded that fluoride can lower the level of tooth decay, and reduce the number of cavities. Tooth decay, also known as “dental caries,” is generated by acid-producing bacteria that can be found on your teeth and gums. The bacteria form a sticky clear film called “plaque.” If left untreated, plaque can lead to serious oral health problems, such as severe cavities and periodontal disease. We use fluoride because it shields young teeth from the damaging acid-producing bacteria. If caught early enough, it can even reverse very small cavities.

More specifically, minerals such as phosphates, calcium, and fluoride are a natural part of the tooth enamel. During a process called demineralization, the acid attacks the enamel, and the teeth begin to lose these minerals. Remineralization occurs when you eat or drink foods that contain these minerals, and strengthen your teeth. Remineralization may not occur fast enough, which is why fluoride treatments are an effective way to combat demineralization and stop tooth decay before it occurs.

At Fred Knaysi DDS, PC, treatment consists of topical fluoride applied directly to the tooth enamel. This fluoride can come in the form of foam, gel, or varnish. These forms of treatment contain high levels of fluoride relative to toothpaste or water; however, only a small amount of fluoride is needed to create the maximum benefit for a child. Recent research indicates fluoride as being just as instrumental in strengthening developing teeth as it is in preventing tooth decay.

Fluoride treatments are pretty quick. We typically apply it with a cotton swab or brush. For younger children, we may use a rinse or foam tray that stays in the mouth for several minutes. Once the treatment is complete, your child will be asked not to eat or drink anything for at least 30 minutes. The fluoride needs time to absorb and repair any areas of microscopic decay.

Every child is different, and fluoride treatments may be recommended every three, six, or twelve months. It all depends on the strength of your child’s teeth, and how often they practice good oral hygiene.
